Chapter 18

I sit on the kitchen stool with my elbows on the counter and my head resting on my hands, watching Vincent like a lovesick teenager. He weaves around the kitchen with his sleeves rolled up, chopping and cutting vegetables, his muscles expanding with the force he exerts. I didn’t know cooking could be so sensual.

He glances over at me as he carves up a piece of chicken breast, a smirk emerging on his lips. “What are you thinking about? You’ve got a weird look on your face.”

“Nothing, just appreciating the scenery,” I say, a soppy smile on my face. “I know I said I didn’t like cooking but I can help you know.”

“Nope. You just sit and appreciate. You can put all your admiration and gratitude into the dessert,” he says.

“I can definitely do that. But if you won’t let me help then I’ll find something else to do. I can’t just sit here ogling you.”

“Why not? I could certainly do nothing but ogle you all day... well... eventually I’d want to do something else.” His eyebrows shoot up suggestively.

“That’s just it, it’s too much of a challenge to look without touching.” I wink at him and get up from the stool, leaving him leering at me. As I walk into the living room Lauren’s computer catches my eye and her mother’s letter comes to mind. I haven’t told Vincent about the Heywood “coincidence” yet, and to some degree I’m intentionally avoiding it. Deep down, I know the person who is sending all these messages and who is desperately trying to convince me to stay away from Vincent is in some way connected to Lauren... and her suicide.

I know that if I bring up the subject again Vincent will freak out, but I can’t exactly hide the information from him. He needs to have all the details if we’re ever going to unravel this perplexing mystery. I grab the laptop and take it to the kitchen island. It’s time to check out Heywood on the internet to see what comes up.

Vincent darts his eyes to me as he scampers around the kitchen. “What are you doing?”

Here goes nothing. “I didn’t get a chance to tell you. When I was putting away all of my things, I found a letter from Lauren’s mum tucked away in her diary,” I begin cautiously. “I’ve been looking for her since Lauren died.”

“I didn’t really interact much with her at the office. Caroline handles all my stuff. She was Andrew’s assistant, so I knew very little about her.”

He throws the chicken breast into the frying pan and stirs. Its savoury smell wafts into the air and teases my empty stomach into rumbling. “Well... the envelope doesn’t have an address but there is a postmark and I want to look up the place... it’s Heywood.”

Vincent stops stirring the pan and the blood from his face drains away as he stares at me. Now I know he is hiding something from me.

I can see pure terror in his eyes and my scalp prickles with apprehension.
